Consideration Factors for Food Tech Furniture

It can be challenging to get a project completed on time, within the budget and to a high standard without disrupting the students’ learning. However, by working closely with our clients, architects, interior designers, and building contractors we can achieve maximum efficiency and have built a business based on excellence, affordability and honesty.

What is the purpose of food tech furniture?

Food technology lessons aim to teach students the importance of nutrition and diet as well as the skills, techniques, and equipment needed for food preparation.

The demand for healthy food in schools has been increasing as nearly a third of children aged 2 to 15 are overweight or obese, which can lead to both physical and mental health issues in the future. The nutrition of school food has greatly improved thanks to healthy eating campaigns, such as Jamie Oliver’s School Dinners, and there are ongoing discussions on whether cooking should be compulsory in schools.

Due to these discussions and the government’s most recent action plan for childhood obesity, there is now a greater need for food technology facilities that will inspire and encourage more students to learn how to cook and eat healthily.

We designed and built a highly dynamic and practical food tech workspace for Heathland Primary School that included bespoke features and provided students with an aesthetically pleasing space to work and learn.

What are the design/functional factors to consider for food tech furniture?

A lot of thought goes into the planning and design of a successful food tech area and many things will need to be considered. Having a well-planned environment can benefit both the teacher and the students and demonstrate to visitors, prospective parents, and students alike that great care and consideration have been taken to develop and maintain the school’s facilities.

Worktops in a highly durable material that can withstand the rigours of everyday use and are water, heat, and chemical resistant, such as Trespa or Velstone solid surfacing, are vital for increasing the furniture’s lifespan. An easy to clean surface will also help with maintenance and prevent the gathering of dirt and food particles.

Providing a suitable storage solution for utensils, appliances, ingredients, and finished products are key to creating a successful food tech area.  Spur-type adjustable shelving is ideal as it can be built-in or free-standing and made specifically to your requirements to suit different types of equipment.

Your food tech environment needs to be fitted with the right equipment so that teachers can give helpful demonstrations and students can be fully engaged and get the most out of the lesson. All of our packages can include sinks, taps, and white goods, all of which are tried and tested to ensure you receive the most suitable equipment to complement the surrounding environment.

Space needs to accommodate both practical and theory lessons with the design enabling students to work safely. The distance between cookers, fridges, and preparation spaces needs to be optimised for a comfortable workspace where students can work individually or as a team. For theory lessons, there needs to be enough surface space for students to write and take notes, computers and whiteboards are often needed for these types of lessons too.

We design, manufacture and install innovative fitted food tech furniture solutions for your classrooms. Rigorous attention to detail is applied to all of our projects, and we ensure that both safety and hygiene are our highest priorities.

FF&E is the ideal solution for food tech classrooms as it is movable furniture that isn’t fixed to the building and can be removed easily when the time comes for it to be replaced, making it simple to create a fully functional environment. We specialise in creating innovative and stylish furniture that can be made to fit challenging shapes and encourage students to take pride in their classroom.
