Fred Nicholson SEND School

Project Brief

Fred Nicholson SEND School (also known as Swaffham SEND School) is a specialist education facility designed to support pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including autism, high-needs learning requirements, and sensory support needs. The new purpose-built school was developed to replace and expand the existing Fred Nicholson School in Dereham, providing increased specialist capacity and modern facilities to better support its growing number of pupils.

The building provides a safe and supportive learning environment where spaces must be adaptable, robust, and easy to manage for both students and staff. Benchmark FF&E Solutions were appointed to deliver the fitted furniture package across classrooms, practical learning spaces, therapy rooms, and staff areas. The design needed to prioritise durability, accessibility, and organisation while supporting a calm and structured environment suited to specialist education.

Location: Swaffham, Norfolk
Contractor: R G Carter
Architect: NPS

Implementation

The furniture package was designed to support a wide variety of teaching, therapy, and life skills activities throughout the school. Benchmark worked closely as a subcontractor for R G Carter and NPS to deliver practical, high-performing fitted furniture solutions that met the demands of a modern SEND environment. Careful coordination during the design, manufacture, and installation stages ensured each space was delivered efficiently, with consideration given to specialist equipment integration, long-term performance, and the day-to-day needs of both staff and pupils.

Our Solution

  • Safety & Durability:
Robust, education-grade furniture was manufactured using 38mm postformed laminate worktops and solid plinth subframes for long-term durability. In high-use areas such as food technology rooms, science spaces, and practical classrooms, Trespa solid grade laminate worktops were installed to provide exceptional impact, moisture, and heat resistance. Secure fixings and reinforced construction ensured the installations were safe and able to withstand the demands of a busy specialist school environment.
  • Accessibility & Inclusivity:
Accessibility was central to the design. Height-adjustable workstations were installed in multiple classrooms and practical learning areas to allow pupils with varying physical needs to comfortably access work surfaces and sinks. Spaces such as life skills rooms, practical kitchens, and ASD learning areas were configured to provide clear circulation and adaptable workspaces that support inclusive learning.
  • Hygiene & Practicality:
Integrated sinks, hygienic worktops, and durable finishes were used throughout teaching areas, care rooms, medical rooms, and staff facilities. Easy-clean laminate surfaces and solid grade laminate materials help maintain hygiene while supporting activities such as food preparation, science learning, and life skills education.
  • Secure Storage:
Extensive storage solutions were installed across classrooms, stores, and specialist areas. Lockable cupboards with Hafele rim locks and espagnolette locking systems provide secure storage for equipment and teaching materials, while bag storage units help maintain organised classroom environments for students.
  • Aesthetic & Environment:
The furniture design supports a calm, structured learning environment suitable for SEND education. Clean lines, durable finishes, and consistent design across spaces help create visually ordered environments that reduce distraction while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for students and staff.

Result

The project was delivered successfully in line with the construction programme, creating a series of welcoming, practical, and supportive learning environments tailored to the needs of SEND pupils. Benchmark helped bring the vision for the new school to life through carefully considered fitted furniture solutions designed to support learning, independence, wellbeing, and day-to-day comfort for both students and staff.

Every space was developed with the understanding that the environment plays an important role in helping pupils feel safe, supported, and able to thrive. From accessible workstations and specialist practical areas to secure storage and calming classroom layouts, the finished spaces provide a durable and inclusive setting that will support students for years to come.
