Project Brief

Thurston Community College, located near Bury St Edmunds, required the fit-out of new science laboratories as part of its campus expansion. The aim was to create robust, compliant, and inspiring learning environments for secondary students engaged in practical scientific study. The furniture specification needed to balance durability and safety with functionality and ease of maintenance, supporting both teaching staff and students in carrying out a wide range of science experiments and demonstrations.

Implementation

Benchmark FF&E Solutions was appointed to deliver and install bespoke laboratory furniture and fittings to meet strict educational and safety standards. The project focused on functionality, resilience, and student safety, with full project management support from Benchmark ensuring coordination between design, manufacture, and on-site installation.

Our Solution:

  • Safety & Durability: Heavy-duty worktops in 16mm Trespa TopLab BASE solid grade laminate were used throughout for their impact resistance, chemical tolerance, and easy-clean properties. Secure fixing systems and robust construction methods ensured safe, long-term use in high-activity lab environments.
  • Accessibility & Inclusivity: Workstations and height-adjustable tables were integrated to accommodate varied learning needs, enabling comfortable access for all students during practical sessions.
  • Hygiene & Practicality: Non-porous Trespa surfaces and epoxy resin sinks were specified to promote hygiene and withstand chemical spills, with smooth bevelled edges for easy cleaning. This ensured compliance with laboratory safety and maintenance standards.
  • Secure Storage: A range of double and single base storage units, under sink cabinets, and shelving systems were installed to keep equipment and materials organised and secure, supporting efficient classroom management.
  • Aesthetic & Environment: The clean, modern finish of the worktops and cabinetry created a professional and structured learning environment, reflecting the college’s commitment to high-quality STEM education.

Result

Benchmark FF&E Solutions successfully delivered the laboratory fit-out to specification and within the project timeframe, ensuring a snag-free completion.
